Exciting Month Ahead!

October is looking like being a very exciting month in the life of Scunthorpe Baptist Church, and we want you to get involved!

The Big Squeeze

We are exciting that on a Sunday morning we are going to have the opportunity to join together with New Life Church Scunthorpe and hold one large celebration. We are also pleased that Russ Howell will be sharing God's word at this special event.

Russ Howell has been a friend of both Scunthorpe Baptist Church and New Life Church for many years, and during that time has often spoken key prophetic words in to the life of the churches, as well as in to Scunthorpe and the North Lincolnshire area.

There will be no celebration happening at SBC as we are encouraging everyone to join us at New Life for what is sure to be a fantastic morning.

This amazing opportunity to unite with our friends at New Life will take place on Sunday 7 October at 10am, although refreshments will be served from 9:30.

SBC Autumn Conference

Every year at SBC we are blessed by a variety of conferences, and this year we believe our annual Autumn Conference is going to be incredible.

It is a great privilege that this year we are going to be blessed with the teaching and ministry of Dr John Andrews. John is a highly respected and gifted bible teacher who has been in full-time Christian Leadership since 1987. A lecturer at both undergraduate and graduate level at Mattersey Hall Bible College, John is also the author of a number of highly recommended books.

Unpacking his latest book "2:52 Learning to GROW on Purpose" John will inspire us to GROW intentionally, as Jesus did, "in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man".

Joint Praise Celebration

During the Raising the Flag season at both SBC and New Life Church we have committed to hosting Joint Praise Celebrations throughout the year. In 2012 we have already held 3 events, and they have proven to be a huge success, and an amazing opportunity to petition to heavens and declare God's goodness and love over our town and region.

It has been a huge blessing to have Andy Wooldridge & the New Life Church band leading us in worship, and we will be joining together again to raise the roof and give God all of the praise and honour he deserves. We would love for you to join us.

Cross Britain

Mark Ritchie, a well-known and respected evanglist in the UK, is going to be walkin 700 miles in just 70 days to share some of his story with the nation, as well as sharing the amazing story of God's love.

While praying Mark saw a picture of Britain as a crowded room, busy and distracted. He felt led to walk into the room and put the Cross down in the middle. Some people will accept it, some will reject it, but no one will ignore it. This is what God has put in his heart to do - to put the Cross in front of Britain.

He started walking in the UK on 26 August, and has already hosted some fantastic events, but we are fortunate that right at the end of the tour Mark is going to be in North Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire. In fact the biggest event on the whole tour is right here in Scunthorpe!

The churches in the area have joined together to book out the Baths Hall (all 1000 seats!), and Mark will spend the evening making people laugh, cry, and hopefully encounter the amazing Gospel of Jesus Christ.

There are also going to be events across the region, including Brigg, Epworth & Barton, as well as Mark finishing the tour in Hull.

Operation Mustard Seed

Today not only sees the start of August but also our launch of Operation Mustard Seed 2012.

So what is it all about?

Operation Mustard Seed is our campaign to raise the profile of mission by increasing opportunities for social action and sharing the Gospel. We are running it throughout the month of August.

We want you to get involved. Whether you have an hour to spare to mow someone's lawn, a week to get involved in a community project or serve on a beach mission, or even longer to serve overseas.

You can arrange your own opportunities with friends or take advantage of some of the various projects we have already organised. There is something for absolutely everyone to do.

Preparing the Way

The week leading up to a big SBC conference is always an exciting one. Final preparations are being made, things are beginning to take shape, and the level of expectation amongst those attending seems to dramatically increase. This week which ends with many from SBC attending the Spring Conference is no different.

However, before we get to the Hayes Christian Centre, in fact before we have even packed a bag for the weekend, it is important that we prepare ourselves for the weekend ahead. It is not that in anyway this weekend is ‘better’ than others, but there is something significant that happens when collectively we set so much time aside for God.

Although to some extent we have planned the sessions, prepared some worship and put loads of time and effort in to make the Conference as good as possible, we really can’t know what God is going to do and what journey we are going to take together.

As we prepare to dedicate so much time to being with each other and with God, let’s prepare ourselves by making sure our focus is on Him, creating space in our hearts for Him to minister, and allowing Him to already be speaking to us.

I pray that you have a great week, that God continues to stir your heart to go to new depths over the coming weekend, and that you arrive on Friday evening ready to get straight in. Travel safely and I will see you there.

Rich Webb

“I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the LORD Almighty.” – Malachi 3:1

A Praying Community

SBC is a praying community. We believe in its power to transform, to comfort and bring revelation of the heart of God.

Since we entered into a season of 'Raising the Flag' in 2012 we have seen a fresh and exciting emphasis be placed on prayer, and we sense strongly that God is leading us to take our call to be a praying community to another level.

This makes it even more important that as a church family we gather together regularly to pray.

Please as much as is possible prioritise our Prayer and Church Meetings that happen on the first Tues evening of every month.

If we are going to continue to grow and move forward in Raising the Flag, we must continue to be a praying community!

Missions Feedback

On Friday evening we had our latest Missions Feedback event, and we heard from four of the SBC community who have recently had first hand experience of going on a missions trip overseas. It was fantastic to hear of the wonderful work they were able to be involved in, but perhaps even more exciting was to see the impact and difference these events had clearly made in their own lives.

We are in a wonderful position as Christ followers in a Church community; we get to bless those in need, but in turn we grow and become more like what God desires for us.

Our motivations should always be to bless and serve those with whom we come in to contact, but isn't it wonderful that God in His grace blesses us so much in return?

If you want to know more about the Missions work at SBC please do get in touch.

God bless

Praise Celebration

Last Sunday night, alongside our friends at New Life Church, we embarked on a fresh journey in order to 'Raise the Flag' even higher across Scunthorpe & North Lincolnshire.

The Church Sanctuary was packed, the stage was set, the lights went up and the two churches joined together to give God all of the praise, that he is so worthy to receive.

And yet I think everyone who was there recognised that it was more significant than just two churches singing great songs of praise to God; it was a declaration of intent - to take a stand and to begin to see breakthrough in our region!

God in His usual way has been showing us more of his heart and desire for Scunthorpe, and we believe passionately that for us to see it come to fruition we must praise, worship and honour God like never before.

God is on the move. Let's praise Him for yesterday, praise Him for today, and praise Him for evermore!

Raising the Flag

During the second half of 2011 the Lead Pastors of New Life Church (Russ) and Scunthorpe Baptist Church (Rich) believed that God was speaking to them about a spiritual issue facing our area. They began to believe that He was calling them to tackle it together.

As a result our two churches are sharing a joint theme for 2012, titled ‘Raising the Flag’. The focus for us is considering how God wants to see our area set free spiritually and what part we have to play in that.

The issue of territorial spirits is not a straightforward one and can be controversial. Our aim in ‘Raising the Flag’ is to be people both of the word and the Spirit and so we will be digging deep into scripture as well as waiting on God for His immediate, prophetic, voice. The metaphor we are using for this spiritual issue is a cuckoo. A cuckoo egg is placed somewhere it doesn’t belong (in the nest of another bird species). After it hatches it seeks to evict the other babies (who are supposed to be there) from the nest and consume all the resources it can. We believe that this is a picture for what we see happening to churches in our area.

Though we will be engaging with this issue in a number of ways, a key element will be our Joint Praise Celebrations. These will happen roughly every other month and will take place on a Sunday evening. They are a chance for anybody from our two churches, or from other churches, to join together simply to praise God.

During 2012 our churches may be focusing on different issues from time to time and entering into different message series. However, our overall focus will be united and the same; we are about ‘Raising the Flag’. Many churches walk in the same direction, but not many walk together. In 2012 our two churches are going to be journeying together and we are excited about all that God is going to do in and through us.
